What Is an EPC
(Extended Plant Count)?

In Colorado, an EPC stands for Extended Plant Count. It is a special medical recommendation that allows qualified medical marijuana patients to grow more cannabis plants than the standard limit when their healthcare provider determines it is medically necessary.

Under Colorado state law, registered medical marijuana patients may grow up to 6 plants (with no more than 3 in flower at a time). With an approved EPC, patients can legally cultivate a higher number of plants—sometimes significantly more—tailored to their specific health needs and physician’s recommendation.

How to Get an EPC in Colorado

To obtain an Extended Plant Count recommendation, patients must:

  1. Be a registered medical marijuana patient in Colorado.
  2. Consult with a licensed healthcare provider who is authorized to evaluate your condition and recommend an increased plant count.
  3. Receive a written recommendation from the provider that clearly states the approved number of plants.
  4. Submit the recommendation to the Colorado Medical Marijuana Registry (online or by mail).

As of 2025, the state does not charge an additional fee for the EPC itself. However, some counties (such as Fremont County) may have their own local review or enforcement fees. Why Consider Getting an EPC?An EPC can be extremely beneficial for patients who:

  • Need higher doses or more frequent use to effectively manage chronic conditions
  • Prefer home-grown cannabis for better quality control or cost savings
  • Produce their own non-inhaled products (oils, edibles, topicals, tinctures, etc.) that require larger amounts of plant material

Important Note: Growing beyond the standard 6-plant limit without a valid EPC can result in serious legal consequences, including fines, criminal charges, or felony prosecution—even for medical patients. An approved EPC provides legal protection as long as you stay within your authorized plant count.

Using Your EPC at Dispensaries

An EPC isn’t limited to home cultivation. Many medical dispensaries also honor Extended Plant Count recommendations by offering higher purchase limits on flower, concentrates, and other products. To take advantage of this:

  • Bring your valid medical marijuana card and your EPC documentation to the dispensary.
  • Ask the staff to link your EPC to your patient profile.

Once verified, you’ll be able to purchase larger quantities per visit according to your approved recommendation.

Not every dispensary accommodates EPC purchase limits, but Lux Verde in Colorado Springs proudly welcomes EPC patients and supports higher limits where permitted.

The Bigger Picture

Medical marijuana is now legal in 38 states, yet many patients still face challenges accessing the full benefits of the law. Extended Plant Counts give patients greater flexibility and independence in managing their medicine—especially those with high needs, mobility limitations, or financial constraints.Navigating the EPC process can feel overwhelming, which is why clear information and supportive service make a real difference. At Lux Verde, we’re here to help patients in Colorado Springs understand their options and make the most of Colorado’s medical marijuana program. If you have questions about EPCs or need guidance, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help.
